Jets report card: Kudos to Robert Saleh

Must read

Grading the Jets’ 34-31 win over the Bengals on Sunday.

OFFENSE

The Jets rolled to 511 total yards, the most they have had in three seasons. They did it with backup QB Mike White (37-for-45, 405 yards, 3 TDs, 2 INTs) having the best game a Jets quarterback has had in quite a while. RB Michael Carter (15 rushes, 77 yards, 1 TD; 9 catches, 95 yards) was tough to take down for the Bengals and kept them on their heels. The offensive line had one of its better days, giving White time to operate and clearing some holes in the run game.

Grade: A

DEFENSE

After giving up 54 points last week, the defense got some redemption against the Bengals. The goal-line stand after White’s first interception was huge. So was Shaq Lawson coming up with an interception in the fourth quarter and Sheldon Rankins sacking Joe Burrow (21-for-34, 259 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT) to secure the win. Bengals WR Ja’Marr Chase was held to a career-low 32 yards on three catches, although he did have one touchdown.

Grade: A

Quarterback Mike White (left) and head coach Robert Saleh got everything right in the Jets’ 34-31 upset win over the Bengals.

SPECIAL TEAMS

No big mistakes or big plays on special teams. Matt Ammendola made two 24-yard field goals and missed a 54-yarder. Thomas Morstead only had to punt once, which is an unusually light day for a Jets punter. Ammendola had six touchbacks.

Grade: B

COACHING

Give Robert Saleh kudos for getting his team to bounce back from that humiliating loss in New England. The Jets showed a lot of resiliency all day, coming back from three turnovers in the first half and overcoming an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter. OC Mike LaFleur called a home run of a game. From the opening drive on, LaFleur pushed the right buttons and did not put too much pressure on Mike White in his first start. DC Jeff Ulbrich had a great game plan for slowing the Bengals’ high-powered offense down.

Grade: A
