A med student whose body was found floating in the Illinois River drowned to death, a coroner found — but it still isn’t clear how he ended up in the water.

Jelani Day, 25, disappeared under mysterious circumstances before his body was found last month and now some are calling for more answers.

Day, an Illinois State University graduate student, disappeared after he was seen at a Bloomington marijuana dispensary on Aug. 24, police said. His car was later found in Peru, concealed by trees, officials said.

His disappearance drew comparisons to the Gabby Petito case. Critics lamented there was not as much attention on Day, a black man, as there was on Petito, a white woman.

When the student’s body turned up in the river on Sept. 4, he was identified using dental records and DNA, according to cops.

But the LaSalle County coroner’s announcement on Monday of Day’s cause of death has left many unanswered questions. It found no evidence of strangulation or assault injuries or a gunshot wound, the Chicago Tribune reported.

More than 300 people marched from Peru Police Department on Tuesday calling for more investigation, including activist Rev. Jesse Jackson, the Tribune said.

Police still are uncertain about how Day ended up in the water.

Day’s mother posted on a Facebook page that she didn’t think he son committed suicide, the Tribune said. In the post on the Justice for Jelani Day page, mom Carmen Bolden Day says she believes her son, described as an avid swimmer, was killed.

“These police departments want an EASY way out,” Carmen Bolden Day wrote on the Justice for Jelani Day page. “They DIDN’T do their job, so they want to look at surface details.”
